The Sportswomans Dinner sold out long ago, but kept it local and real for an entertaining evening.

When all tickets sold out within just a couple of weeks of going on sale in the summer, it was clear that Jeanfield Swifts Ladies Sportswomans Dinner was an eagerly anticipated event. And the high expectations for an entertaining evening were well met by an excellent dinner followed by funny and interesting contributions from a talented line-up of speakers.

The event was the conceived, planned and realised by Jeanfield Swifts Girls stalwarts, Laura and David Barnett, ably assisted by family members and friends. They did the club proud in delivering a fantastic evening that raised £5690 for much-needed funds to bolster next year’s budget.

Master of Ceremonies Tommy Campbell kept the evening moving along at a good pace, introducing no fewer than four guest speakers.

First up was Gemma Fay, a Perth lass, who talked eloquently and passionately about her experiences of joining the national set up as a teenager and then maturing over the years to win 162 caps and counting. She gave the audience an insight into the rollercoaster nature of professional sport, outlining both highs and lows of her career and giving the players present words of encouragement to use their own experiences to develop.

Gemma was followed by another local whose connection with football is well known. Stuart Cosgrove spoke about his upbringing in Perth, his memories of the very room in which the dinner was taking place, his love of football and travelling with the Tartan Army and Saintees to support Scotland and St. Johnstone.

The final two speeches, from former St. Johnstone favourite Allan Moore and comedian Jo Jo Sutherland had to be experienced live, and were largely unreportable to this website’s family audience! Suffice to say they both had the diners in stitches and contributed to a night of great entertainment.

The evening drew to a close with the drawing of the raffle, and an auction of some great prizes and memorabilia that had been kindly donated to the club to raise funds.

Finally, the club would like to express its thanks to those whose contribution made the evening such a wonderful event: the sponsors, the MC Tommy Campbell, speakers Gemma Fay, Stuart Cosgrove, Allan Moore and Jo Jo Sutherland, the girls of the U17s and staff of the Letham Club who served the food and drink, and, of course, to Laura and David for all of the hard work, which delivered all that was promised and more.
