Last gasp goal denies 03's
By Steve Antoniewicz
Jeanfield visited Methil to take on East Fife in the first league match of 2019
The 2003's kicked on the new year with an away fixture on a bumpy pitch and a strong wind Vs East Fife in Methil.
The Swifts took control of the game almost immediately and looked hungry. A free kick inside the Fife half of the pitch was floated to the back post by Daniel Millan the goal keeper came but could not claim it and Joe Jeffers reacted sharply to knock the ball home. 0-1
A second goal followed again with Jeffers prominent. He was played in behind at the angle but rather than shoot from wide on the right he skipped past two home defenders and hit the byline. His driven cross could only be diverted home by the defender from two yards out who stopped a certain finish by Jorge Palma Montano.
With 15 minutes gone Swifts were looking comfortable but an uncharacteristic error at the back would hand the home side a lifeline. A hopeful ball down the right hand side was read well by Josef Honeyman who looked like he would shepherd it out of play but instead attempted to clear. The clearance fell perfectly for an onrushing Fife attacker who scored to peg back Jeanfield. 1-2
Diego Hernadez Rocha was deputising well in goals again but could do nothing about the equaliser. A free kick was awarded 25 yards out and a well struck shot found the back of the net to bring the game level after 30 mins. 2-2
Jeanfield responded almost immediately. The impressive Kieran Oates made a trademark run out wide and Rob Douglas showed great awareness to split the defence and pick him out, Oates supplied an unerring first time finish across the keeper to find the corner. 2-3.
Jeanfield could have been further ahead in the half but a determined East Fife were doing well to stay in the game. They were rewarded in the last moments of the half when a bouncing ball was not dealt with by the Swifts midfield, the ball was swung in from the left and again East Fife drew level. 3-3 HT.
The fifers kicked off the second half with renewed impetus and looked the more threatening team in the first 20 minutes of the half. They would take the lead for the first time. A quick break down the left hand side allowed their player into the Jeanfield box. A mistimed challenge conceded a penalty which was duly converted. 4-3 to the home side.
This seemed to wake Jeanfield, some neat play through the centre released Jeffers down the right but he slashed at the finish, sending it wide of the near post. Jeffers was flagged offside when through on goal again after a great ball from Finlay Duncan. But the equaliser would come when Ronan Antoniewicz chased down a ball he had no right to win, won possession and switched the play into midfield. The half time substitute and trialist had made an intelligent run in behind the full back and was picked out before finishing well at the near post. 4-4.
Jeanfield looked for the winner and Roger Van Schaik on for Palma Montano was having an impact. In what was the pass of the game he evaded two challenges in the centre before taking out three fife players to release Jeffers one on one with the keeper. The keeper was sharp off his line and went to ground. Jeffers claimed he was impeded but any suggestion of a penalty was waved away by the ref.
In the closing minutes, with Jeffers down injured in the opposition box the ref ignored calls to stop the play, as the home side broke up the left. A miscommunication between defender and keeper allowed the attacker to nip in and pass the ball into the Jeanfield net with virtually the last kick. FT 5-4
A good performance to score four away from home and a game Jeanfield did not deserve to lose. MOTM Kieran Oates.
