All square for Swifts and Strollers
By Steve Antoniewicz
The mid-table match between Jeanfield and Glenrothes ended in a draw
As the season reaches its conclusion, the 03's welcomed Glenrothes to the Riverside for the first time.
With the Swifts in 5th and Glenrothes in 4th, Jeanfield were looking for a win to close the gap and be in with a chance of climbing the table.
Jeanfield started the game looking very sharp, with Kieran Oates in particular showing great commitment and drive.
A flowing move saw Jeanfield take the lead in the first 5 minutes. The ball was played from the Jeanfield backline, through midfield and reached Joe Jeffers who had pulled out to the right hand side, using his strength he held off two challenges before picking out Daniel O'Callaghan at the back post who had timed his run perfectly to tuck the ball home from the six yard line. 1-0
Glenrothes responded and looked to play very direct to their two strikers. The Strollers 16 and 13 were a handful but Daniel Millan, Ronan Antoniewicz and Nathan Howgate and Oates were proving more than a match in defence. On any occasion they were released in behind there was always good cover.
Swifts midfield were working hard off-the-ball and Scott Peebles, Rob Douglas and Finlay Duncan were especially prominent in regaining possession at the breakdown. Several times they played their way through the away team and looked to create but a Swifts could not quite find the vital second goal. HT 1-0
The game was being contested all over the park and start of the second half saw the ref issue more than one yellow card.
Jeanfield missed opportunities to extend the lead and it would cost them when Strollers equalised early in the half.
Jeanfield replied almost immediately to reclaim the lead this time O'Callaghan turning provider this time to set up Finlay Duncan with his second goal from midfield in as many weeks. 2-1.
The home side were noticeably resilient, repelling the away sides attacks and still looking a threat on the counter. But Glenrothes would notch an equaliser in the last five minutes via a move down the Jeanfield right broke kindly at the edge of the box and Fraser Cumming could not stop it crossing the line.
The game would finish even and Jeanfield were unlucky not to take all three with an energetic and committed display. MOTM Kieran Oates.
