Young Swifts edged out in evenly-fought cup-tie

For the first time in over 2 months the boys had a competitive fixture down at Jeanfield as we hosted Cupar Colts in the East Region Cup Round 1.
Cupar were the quickest out of the blocks in the opening minutes and were rewarded with a goal on 5 minutes with a good finish by the Cupar No 7 after breaking free. The boys were struggling to get any fluency in their play and Cupar were unlucky not to extend their lead when a shot down the left hit the post. However we started to come into it and created some good chances which we couldn't convert as we chased the equalizer with half time approaching.

With a couple of wee formation tweaks the boys started the 2nd half firmly on the front foot and really pressurising the opponents defence. With Cupar playing a very high line and an offside trap (think Arsenal '89 for those old enough to remember ?) we felt that we would get chances and this was the case when Matthew, having a great game down the left, chased on to a great cross field pass, left his marker and slotted high into the net for a deserved equalizer.

Both teams were now chasing the winner and both Fergus and Brodie came close with efforts. Cupar were also pressing and unfortunately for the boys with about 15 mins to go a through ball was met by the Cupar No 7 (undoubtedly their best player in the match) who squeezed a shot off the soft turf passed Cammy for their 2nd.

Despite some late pressure as we tried to throw the kitchen sink to force extra time, Cupar held firm to progress to the next round.

An excellent competitive game between two evenly-matched teams and one goal in it sums it up. Boys can really proud of their efforts today. Man of the Match was Matthew who had a superb game today down that left side with lightning pace and finished it off with a great goal. Well done Matthew.
Good luck to Cupar in the next round.
