Swifts win a tough battle

The Swifts headed to the South Inch to play the hard working Bridgeton where Scott McCabe was forced into making 3 changes on the back of a convincing win last week.

It only took Jeanfield one and a half minutes to break the deadlock made by youngster Josh McCleary on his first start for the team. McDonald played a lofted ball which met by the head of Booth to put McCleary in behind Bridgeton’s defence. McCleary held of 2 defenders and slotted one home under the keeper GOAL 1-0 Jeanfield.

The rest of the half lacked any quality from either team with little football being played or chances being made with the exception of a well taken Bridgeton goal. On the 36th minute the Swifts back 3 went to sleep and one defender was out of position keeping the Bridgeton striker onside near the half way line. The striker broke through on goal with only the keeper to beat and he left it until the last second to chip it into the far corner GOAL 1-1 Bridgeton.

Half time 1-1

It was clear that McCabe was not happy at half time as he delivered an angry team talk and 2 players were hauled off.

The half time team talk and changes made the world of difference and the Swifts came out the blocks quicker than the home team. Phillips and Booth both had great chances to score but the Bridgeton keeper pulled off some brilliant saves.

On the 61st minute Sime broke down the right and whipped in a pin point cross to the head of veteran Chris Bell who seems to be maturing like a fine wine. Bell leapt up like a salmon beating all the defenders around him and headed one home for his second goal in 2 games GOAL 2-1 Jeanfield.

Moments later the Swifts defence switched off again and lost the ball on the half way line. 2 Bridgeton players found themselves through on goal however couldn’t capitalise as a poor shot was hit straight into the hands of the Jeanfield keeper.

Stand in captain Kris Sime had a brilliant chance to make it 3-1 when a long throw bounced in front of him 3 yards out but he failed to hit the target.

With 20 minutes to go Bridgeton went all guns blazing and put Jeanfield under increasing pressure. McCabe made the remaining substitutes including bringing himself on in an attempt to stop the barrage of attacks and with a quick formation change the Swifts held out until the end.
