Coupar Angus V Jeanfield Swifts AFC Match Report
By Chris Mathews
Swifts lose out in feisty affair
This highly anticipated match was our most important of the league so far. This game was going to be a battle against a team who have narrowly got the upper hand on us twice this season.
The Swifts got off to a bad start after conceding a penalty after only 8 mins. The ball gets away from Sime who is second to the tackle and takes down the man who looked likely to score. Morrow almost spectacularly saves but can do nothing to stop the ball hitting the back of the net GOAL 1-0 Coupar.
Swifts tried to bounce back and had their chance when McCleary skipped past the defence before being chopped down by the Coupar Angus keeper to prevent a certain goal. Captain Henderson stepped up but his shot was too close to the keeper who saved well to his left.
For the next 20 mins Coupar Angus were on top, winning all second balls and dominant but had few chances and were limited to speculative efforts. This was until around the 35 minute mark when Sime slipped leaving them with 2 clean through on the keeper. Coupar should have made more of it taking too long passing between the strikers and gave time for the Swifts defence to recover.
This scare spurred the Swifts into action which saw us dominate the last 10 mins of the half, the main chance when Young Col made a brilliant run into box taking on a couple of defenders before getting the ball to Sam who shoots wide from a tough position.
Coupar Angus 1
Jeanfield Swifts 0
In a very even first half with few chances for both sides apart from the penalties luck fell Coupar’s way. Assistant manager Lee Kelman taking the half time talk, urging the Swifts to play with confidence cut out the mistakes and press the game. We would need to dig deep to turn round this important tie.
For the much of the first quarter it was pretty even with most of play in the middle of the park. This was until 59th minute when Jeanfield keeper Morrow shouted for a long ball coming through, McDonald was already half committed which seemed to put Morrow off who then scuffed it! unfortunately falling for the Coupar striker who’s shot trickled against the post. Unfortunately, rushing back was Sime who could not clear it and it rebounded into the back of the net GOAL 2-0
This goal through Jeanfield for 5-10 minutes leaving a gap in the centre of defence which saw the Coupar striker through on goal but never managed to capitalise.
Kelman decided to change things up sacrificing Terry in midfield changing to 3-4-3 bringing on striker Sean Coull on.
On the 70th minute mark Scotty Phillips got the better of his man and drove a hard cross which made its way to Greive who did well to keep his shot down scoring at a vital time to keep us in the game GOAL 2-1 Jeanfield
For the last 20 minutes Jeanfield dominated the game but Coupar made difficult with their backs to wall defending.
This restricted Jeanfield to a few clear cut opportunities but there were several goal mouth scrambles and corners we could have taken advantage of on another day.
Coupar Angus 2
Jeanfield swifts 1
It finished 2-1 Coupar Angus, which was bitterly disappointing considering Jeanfield lost the game due their own mistakes. On another day they would have won that game. However, we need to make sure this doesn’t derail us as we fight for promotion.
