Swifts move into next round of cup

Lee Deans scored headers in each half as Swifts disposed of North League Coupar Angus at Foxhall Park on Saturday. Stevie McManus, Chris Scott & Daniel Kelly were also on the score sheet in the first meeting of the teams since August 2007 when the home side home on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

Swifts headed out to Foxhall minus several players due to holidays but manager Ross Gunnion was back in the defence while new signing Mark Duigan made an appearance on the bench as he continued his comeback from injury.

The home side have virtually a new squad this season and have yet to win a game but with all those new players it will take time to gel. Despite this it was they who had the opening chance of the match. Casey cut inside from the right and slipped the ball to Al-Saffer but Swifts number 1 Mark Mitchell stood up well and made a great block. Mitchell had to look sharp once more when Casey shot from the edge of the box but Mitch got down well to hold on to the ball.

After this the visitors settled down and started to move the ball quicker than they had and started to control the game and create chances against a stubborn Coupar defence.

Stevie McManus slipped a ball through to Robbie Holden who bore down on goal. Normally composed he tried to smash it past the keeper who stood up well to block the ball away. Soon Swifts took the lead and McManus was involved.

His corner from the right was knocked on by Kelly for Deans to power a header into the net. It only took minutes for the leader to be doubled and the finish was a rare sight.

Gunnion broke from the back, reminiscent of Beckenbauer in his prime, passing to McManus who played in Chris Scott down the wing. Kiffy crossed to the back post where Macca had continued his run and headed into the net. A very rare sight indeed.

Swifts continued to move forward but went into the break only 2 goals ahead.

The second period was one way traffic towards the home goal with Mitchell having very little to do allowing him to keep his gloves clean until next week. Scott had a chance when Deans played the ball over the defence but Kiffys attempted lob went miles over the bar. The third goal did come soon and it looked like it was planned on the training ground.

McManus fired a corner into the near post where Daniel Kelly flicked the ball past the keeper into the net to put the game beyond any doubt.

Holden then had another chance when Fraser Smith played him in on the angle but the home keeper saved from the Swifts number 9 once more. Kelly was next to be thwarted by the home keeper when he brought down a high ball on the edge of the box before turning his man. Goal number 4 arrived not long after following some ping pong in the home box.

The ball fell to Holden who unselfishly squared to Scott who passed the ball into the net to open his Swifts account. Hopefully the first of many for the talented winger.

Once again Kelly was denied by the home keeper when he collected a pass from Scott Mollison and his attempted curling shot into the far corner was saved camera style by the keeper. McManus was next to try when he cut inside and from 20 yards let loose. This season the ginger genius has been scoring from this range but this time it went wide of the target. Next to try was gaffer Gunnion who strode out from the back but fired over from 30 yards.

The final goal arrived and once more it was from a McManus corner. Fired it from the left it found the head of Deans who once again powered his header into the net.

Overall a good win for Jeanfield who had been on the end of heavy beatings in their last 2 games albeit against a different level of opposition.

Next up Camelon visit the Riverside for the first time since a 2012 East of Scotland Cup game which they won on penalties after coming back from 3-0 down to level the game in the last minute at 3-3. They are managed by ex Swifts player manager Murray McDowell who was also manager at Kinnoull and Luncarty where he managed several of the current Swifts squad.
