Jeanfield Swifts 2003's return home as winners of the Salver from the prestigious 2016 Scotland Cup.

Last weekend, as part of pre-season preparations the Jeanfield 2003's took part in the 25th Scotland Cup in Ayrshire.

With four fixtures over two days the tournament proved a real test at an early stage for the new look team.

Saturday saw the young swifts take on Paisley's Linwood Rangers in their first game. A fast start and a confident performance saw the team secure a 4-1 victory thanks to a calmly struck penalty from Ben Ruddy and a superb hat-trick from Daniel O'Callaghan.

Next up on the Saturday was Claremont AFC from East Kilbride. The swifts continued their fine football and form, quickly establishing a 2-0 lead. But the team were pegged back by a Claremont side, who drew level at 2-2 and also hit the wood work twice. But the swifts showed great resiliance once again to take the lead through some lethal striker play by Daniel. Chances to extend the lead continued to flow and the Swifts were only denied by some fine goalkeeping. A midfield mix-up in the last minute of the game gave Claremont the chance they needed and their striker took advantage keeping a cool head to finish well. Final Score 3-3.

With two hard fixtures completed and no defeats the team enjoyed the rest of the Saturday camping on the South Ayrshire coast.

Sunday morning and the team's first fixture (effectively the semi final) would be against Ayrshire's own Glenburn MWFC. An excellent Glenburn started the sharper of the two teams and quickly raced into a 2 nil lead. The second coming straight from a corner, with strong winds a significant factor. The tough first half conditions and strong play from Glenburn saw the swifts forced into changes and facing a 4-0 deficit at HT. A much improved showing in the second half saw Daniel continue fine scoring form to snatch a goal and a serious claim for penalty was also denied. But chasing the game allowed Glenburn the space to finally wrap up a 5-1 victory.

That meant Jeanfield would play for the Salver in the final Vs Lanarkshire's Kirkfield United. A very competitive match ensued and unfortunately not much quality football followed from either team. But Jeanfield always looked the likelier team to score and peppered the Kirkfield goal regularly. Some robust challenges saw Kirkfield reduced to 10 and that could have been more when Saul Robinson was hacked down right in front of the touchline. The game went into it's latter stages finely poised at 2-2 and the Swifts showed great character to score a deserved winner in the last five minutes and hold on to once again take home some silverware.

Thanks all the parents who travelled to support us, to the tournament organisers and to all our opponents for making this a weekend to remember. Big thanks especially to our two young Goalkeepers John and Connor from Irvine Meadow 04's who kindly stepped in to fill the void at extremely short notice.

With a satisfactory work out under our belts we look forward to the season proper getting underway.
