John Anderson arrived at the Riverside in the summer of 2008 following an excellent spells at both Scone Thistle and Luncarty. His size, power and aerial ability made him on of the most wanted men in the region but he came to Swifts and had the best spell of his career and won the most trophies.
He was captain of the most successful Swifts squads in recent times winning the Central League, GA Engineering Cup x 2 and the last ever Fife League Cup in 2012 and 2013. Those GA finals saw Jock destroy favourites Culter up at Sunnybank in 2012. The North side had turned up with their fancy dress outfits and expected to wipe the floor with us but a hat-trick from the big man meant that the costumes were left in the changing room. One year later Swifts made it a Double winning 3-0 over Montrose Roselea with Jock scoring just the twice this time.
He was to leave the club that summer returning to his first club Luncarty as player /assistant manager but it the summer of 2015, Ross Gunnion took over at the Riverside and the Legend returned home. John played a vital part in the club winning promotion to the Super League that season and was tempted back to play the next as we retained our top flight status.
On his day he was unplayable and was very rarely beaten in the air. He also stood in for Mark Mitchell in the goal when required and often reminds us of a penalty save against Thornton Hibs.
These days Jock is a member of the clubs committee and over 35s team. He was one of the main organisers in Mark Mitchells testimonial against St Johnstone this past summer.
POSITION - Striker
PREVIOUS CLUBS - Scone Thistle & Luncarty
WHICH TEAM DO YOU SUPPORT - Dundee
WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? - Alan Campbell. Tough choice as Tony Holt was up there but Alfie was a rolls royce of a player and just edges it for me. Antz when in the mood though was scary
BIGGEST JOKER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? - Tight one this as its between a few. Reido (Jamie Reid) always has been and still is that immature and annoying wee brother that does not shut up or sit down. Macca (Stevie McManus) was another. No one was save when he was around. He loved drawing a boaby picture on the gaffers tactics board or if someone had some horrible clobber it was soon a goner. Robbie Holden was always lurking about too. All you would get from them was "it wasnt me but i know who it might have been but i cant say!!!"
MOST INTELLIGENT PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? - Pains me to say it but probably the gaffer Ross Gunnion. Loves to win a quiz and loves gloating about it more.
LEAST INTELLIGENT PLAYED YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? - He is actually quite intelligent but no one looks thicker than Kev Fowler during a managers team talk. Mouth open looking around the room for colours and shapes. But i would have to go for Gav Mackie. Was complaining about his new size 7 boots being really tight. Ended up sending them back and ordering a size 6!!!
MOST INJURED PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH? - Poor Stevie McAllister. Even Beryl felt sorry for him. What a player he was though.
FUNNIEST FOOTBALL STORY FROM YOUR CAREER? - Again so many but we were just talking about this one in one of the chats the other day and i was in tears thinking about it. When i was the number 2 at Luncarty we were playing away at Brechin Vics. David Carr (Chucky) was running down the wing and had one of the best face plants you will ever see on a football park. I mean proper, he was flossing dirt out of his teeth for weeks after. Legs gave way and he could not get his arms up in time. Even worse was that our keeper that day was Mark Mitchell. 20 minutes after the incident, while the game was still going on you could hear Mitch laughing away at Chucky.
DIRTIEST PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH OR AGAINST? GIVE A REASON WHY - Mark Gordon. Played against each other and absolutely hated each other. Horrible guy on the park and we did not have much time for each other off it. Finally became team-mates when Bogus Brown took over as the manager. Bogus managed to talk me round by saying "every team needs a Marco. Just trust me on this one skip". After playing with him for a good few years i cannot disagree with that. He was spot on. Horrible guy but a winner and a top team mate.
3 CELEBS YOU WOULD INVITE FOR DINNER - Chic Charnley, Alan Brazil and Si Ferry. All love a bevvy and Ferrys due me a pint
CRAZIEST GAFFER YOU HAVE PLAYED UNDER AND A REASON WHY? - Alec Williams. Dont know where to start.
WORST MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? - Again with Luncarty and again it was a GA Cup final but it was at Tannadice against Lochee United. Mitch was our captain and keeper and had recently lost his Grandad and all we talked about was winning the cup for him. His young lad Logan was mascot on the day and Mitch was outstanding, easily the man of the match. Sadly we lost on penalties and i am not scared to admit there were a few tears that day.
BEST MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? - Scoring a hat-trick in the GA Final up in Aberdeen and being captain of the "Double Double" winning squad. The team spirit in that team was second to none.
