Jeanfield Swifts Community FC is delighted to note a first national call-up for Joan Masterton, a driving force behind its Women's Walking Football programme.
Joan was instrumental in bringing Walking Football to Riverside several years ago. Her skill and dedication to her sport has previously been rewarded with the captaincy of both the Jeanfield Over 50s team and the Regional Over 50s, and now her country has come calling and Joan is ready to don national colours for the first time.

Growing up in an era when girls were told football wasn't for them, Joan never lost her love for the game. When the opportunity finally came to put on a pair of boots in later life, she grasped it wholeheartedly. Now she hopes her achievements can inspire the next generation of girls and women to aim for the top in their sport.
Joan's place on the plane to the Euros was confirmed by Walking Football Scotland earlier this month. The Scotland team travels to Switzerland with the full support of the SFA, marking an important step for Walking Football in Scotland.
Speaking about her inclusion in the Scotland team, Joan said "I'm so grateful that Jeanfield welcomed women's walking football into the club. Our sessions are primarily about fun, fitness and friendship but the club has also supported those of us who want to play competitively. Playing for Scotland is the stuff dreams of made of; I am beyond myself with excitement and can't wait to head to Switzerland in June.
Jeanfield Swifts' Women's Walking Football programme runs weekly sessions for women of all ages, but predominantly over 40s, with no upper limit. All abilities are welcome and coaching is provided. Everyone at Jeanfield Swifts would like to wish Joan and the Scotland team the very best of luck for their upcoming tournament. We hope you have the best time, play well and fly the flag for club and country!
