Q & A with Scott Brown

Q & A with Scott Brown

Scott Cummings25 May 2020 - 21:02

Former Swifts player & manager talks about his career

Scott “Bogus” Brown signed up with Jeanfield in the summer of 1993 moving from Bankfoot where he had played for 2 seasons after playing for Swifts under 18 team. A talented left sided player he was often named in the Tayside Region under 23 squad. Persistent shoulder injuries ended his career before he moved to Bankfoot as assistant manager before taking over the reigns in 2000.

He led the Bankies to the Tayside First Division by winning the Second Division in his first season before being relegated back down. He left Coronation Park in controversial circumstances to take over at Kinnoull in the summer of 2002 where he would spend 8 years taking them from the Tayside Second Division to the Super League. This was in the days before the Premier League where the regions winners would be promoted to the top-flight. They were relegated after a season and unfortunately could go get the Tulloch Park side back to the top division.

Bogus came home to the Riverside in the summer of 2010 taking over from Murray McDowell. Despite initial scepticism Swifts finished that first season strongly before what was to be the most successful period in the clubs recent history. 4 trophies in 2 seasons was only bettered in that time by Auchinleck Talbot and Linlithgow Rose. Scott stepped down in the autumn of 2013 but is still seen that the Riverside when his beloved Dundee United are not playing.

He has however signed up for Swifts over 35s team and put in a great shift in our only game so far playing in many different positions despite the manager not agreeing to them!!!

POSITION – Left Back, Left Midfield, Sub, Manager

PREVIOUS CLUBS – Bankfoot & Kinnoull

WHICH TEAM DO YOU SUPPORT – Dundee United, Manchester United & Jeanfield Swifts

WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED AND WHY? – Andy Brannigan. An absolute winner and accepted nothing less than 100% from everyone.
WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER YOU HAVE MANAGED AND WHY? – Sandy Ross. He was my captain for over 10 years with 3 different clubs. For the same reasons as Andy B. He was well respected by every team-mate. I used to call him most Friday nights to talk through the team and the tactics.

BIGGEST JOKER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH OR MANAGED AND WHY? – The Holden, McManus & Mackie combination always kept you on your toes. At least one of them would be at it, if they were quiet then you knew something was about to happen.

MOST INTELLIGENT PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? – Big Chris Martin. Centre half from Newport who loved himself but had the brains to back it up. He is doing very well of himself now as a mobile app/software guy.

MOST INTELLIGENT PLAYER YOU HAVE MANAGED AND WHY? – Obviously the lad Gunnion but sometimes he had a bit too much to say for himself.

DAFTEST PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH AND WHY? – Mad Brian Scott. You just wound him up and let him go. Absolutely fearless, he’d run through brick walls for the team.

DAFTEST PLAYER YOU HAVE MANAGED & WHY? – Barry Ward. Nightmare to manage. Always attended training but had a knack of going out on a Friday night & not turning up on a Saturday. Always forgave him as he was a good lad. Jamie McKenzie runs him close though.

MOST INJURED PLAYER? – Me. See later.

FUNNIEST FOOTBALL STORY FROM YOUR CAREER? – I’ve got a couple. Mark Gordon phoning up apologising that he wouldn’t be at training as he was working late … yet my phone said “ Marco Home”! So I called him back, no answer, tried again and he picked up and said “aye ok i’ve f*cked it up Bogus, I’ll be down shortly”. Tony Holts testimonial. He was handing out the starting jerseys describing each player. “Number 9, the best striker I have ever played with and a great guy”. It was meant for Chris McLeish but Billy Carle sitting next to Beako(Chris), jumped up and caught it. Tony had to explain to Dr Goals(Billy) that he wasn’t talking about him and to hand the top to Beako. The whole changing room were rolling around the floor in laughter.

DIRTIEST PLAYER YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH? GIVE A REASON WHY – Andy Brannigan. An animal who knew the dark arts off by heart.

DIRTIEST PLAYER YOU HAVE MANAGED? GIVE A REASON WHY – Skip, John Anderson. Absolute beast and rag dolled many a centre half. His performance in the GA Cup final against Culter was unplayable. He bullied his way to a hat-trick. Outstanding

3 CELEBS YOU WOULD INVITE FOR DINNER – Sir Alex Ferguson, Jock Stein and Jim McLean. No explanation needed.

CRAZIEST GAFFER YOU HAVE PLAYED UNDER AND A REASON WHY? – Robin Wood at Bankfoot. He would be calm then all of a sudden just lose it. Most of the boys were surprised he never had a heart attack. He’d then end most of his team talks with “just get it upfront to Cammy or Sweeney”.

WORST MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? – As a player it was having to give up playing at 25 due to injury. I think it was 9 shoulder dislocations and 2 operations in 4 years. The surgeon thought I was a rugby player. As a manager it was stepping down in 2013 due to a number of factors. I needed a break after 15 years of management, the close season signings hadn’t gone to plan and injuries to key players meant it was a tough time. I felt fresh blood was needed and the new manager came in and done well.

BEST MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? – The double double years from 2011-2013 were undoubtably the best as manager. The Central League title, 2 GA Cup (Culter & Montrose Roselea) wins and beating Kelty in the last ever Fife League Cup final. The group of players we assembled were phenomenal with a team spirit to match. As a player it was just playing with so many good players at Swifts. I played in a good few old school junior teams.

BEST PLAYERS PLAYED WITH – 4-4-2 Formation

BEST PLAYERS MANAGED – 4-3-3 Formation
