17s edge closer to title

17s edge closer to title

Andy McLeish27 Oct 2016 - 07:47

Following a minutes silence for the passing of Billy Smith the 17s set about honouring his memory.

After 3 tough games v East Fife, Swifts expected a tough game. The 1st half was tighter than the HT score suggested with Swifts fortunate to be 3 up. The first goal came from Mhairi Morrison after 10 mins when she controlled well and turned to knock home from distance. This didn't settle Swifts who were struggling to find passes into the sun and playing the long ball. 22 minutes in tenacity by Hannah Clark saw her double Swifts lead following a clearance error by the young East Fife keep Chloe who despite the score line had a good game. East Fife were tough but Swifts were handling their attacks although only just at times. Eve, Niamh and Megan were communicating well and passing the ball around the back with composure, with Ciara showing good reading of the game after her injury lay off and Kayleigh giving her usual skilful and tough performance. Jess was quietly going about winning good ball and linking well with Rachel who in turn was setting up attack option for the strikers and linking well with Tara on the right and Olivia on the left wings. It would be a great ball from this play that set up Hannah to round the keeper and score from a tight angle for Swifts 3rd.

HT: 3-0

After wise words from Nathan at half time, Swifts started to calmly play the ball around and this composed play nearly saw Hannah and Mhairi add to their tallies. A rare error by Megan allowed East Fife to get one back before Mhairi was felled in the box and Rachel stepped up to score from the penalty spot 10 mins into the half. It was all Swifts now and Tara played a ball into Mhairi to get her 2nd. Sheyenne immediately replaced her with 25 to go and a minute later Rachel played Hannah in for her 2nd. Leona replaced Jess and Lisa went on for Olivia and both immediately set about putting their coaches words into action. A short time later with 18 minutes left Tara scored from a Rachel corner. Deanna replaced Ciara and moments later Tara put Hannah through for her 4th and Swifts 8th. Jess replaced Hannah and Rachel moved up front with Jess dropping back into midfield. East Fife got their 2nd after 30 minutes and despite good chances the last 10 minutes were played out without further scoring.

FT: 8-2

The 17s are now one point from securing the East League title with 6 points on offer. After a 4 week lay off this was a rusty performance despite the score line but the response from the squad to Nathan's HT words pleased the young manager / coach who's desire to see his team play the right way and encouragement to do so are admirable. The girls did the memory of ex club chair Billy Smith proud and all their thoughts are wth his family and friends.
