Jeanfield Swifts and St.Johns locked horns at the riverside for a crucial Presidents Cup group stage encounter, with both sides boasting a perfect record of two wins from their opening two matches. Adding extra spice to the occasion was Jeanfield's dominant record against St.Johns this season, having already secured victory in all four of their previous meetings. The Swifts were aiming to extend that winning streak to five.
However, it was St.Johns who drew first blood in the opening minute. A quick throw-in and a simple pass put their striker through on goal, who calmly slotted the ball under the Jeanfield keeper.
The Swifts responded swiftly. Just two minutes later, a K.Mitchell corner found the head of A.Abboud, who made no mistake in leveling the score.
Both sides then battled hard to take the lead. It was Jeanfield who broke the deadlock five minutes before halftime. An A.Hay throw-in found K.Mitchell, who drove centrally and unleashed a shot through a crowded penalty area, finding the back of the net in the far corner.
With palpable tension in the air, the Jeanfield halftime team talk emphasised unity, and the Swifts delivered. The second half remained goalless, largely thanks to an inspired performance from Jeanfield keeper J.Welch, who pulled off several brilliant saves to deny St.Johns an equaliser.
