Jeanfield Swifts travelled to Almondbank to face Bridgeton AFC in the Ashleigh Cup Semi-Final, with the sun shining and a place in the final firmly in their sights.
Swifts started brightly, playing some impressive football. Just after the 23rd-minute water break, L. McManamon picked out A. Abboud on the left. Abboud cut inside, spotted the keeper off his line, and curled a stunning effort into the top right corner – his 53rd goal of the season.
Jeanfield continued to control the game, but a lapse in communication between defender and goalkeeper in the 28th minute gifted Bridgeton a simple equaliser.
Despite pushing for a second before half-time, Jeanfield couldn’t restore their lead.
In the second half, Bridgeton began to tire, allowing the Swifts to dominate possession and press for a winner. The referee bizarrely had to confirm if the game would go to extra time during the second water break, adding to the tension as the clock ticked down.
With just five minutes to play, A. Abboud laid the ball off at the edge of the box to K. Mitchell, whose sublime first touch set himself perfectly before rifling the ball into the top corner, sending the Jeanfield sidelines into celebration.
