With the Riverside looking doubtful, Jeanfield opted to switch venues and host Letham AFC at Seven Acres for their League Cup Quarter Final.
The Swifts started brightly and opened the scoring after 10 minutes. A ball into the box found A. Abboud, whose clever backheel set up J. Jardine. His effort deflected off a defender and into the net. Jeanfield pushed on and struck the crossbar twice but were unable to find a second goal. On 19 minutes, Letham equalised when a cleared corner was flicked back into the box. The Swifts’ defence failed to react and Letham finished well.
Both sides continued to create chances and it was Letham who took the lead on 25 minutes. A runner went untracked from midfield, broke through on goal and calmly chipped the advancing keeper. Letham could have extended their lead soon after, but some last-ditch defending kept Jeanfield in the contest. At the other end, the Swifts were also pushing for an equaliser and thought they had it when A. Abboud found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Replays will be worth a look, as A. Smith appeared to control the ball before cutting it back to Abboud.
At half-time, the players were taken inside for a frank discussion, with the message clear: without a response, the chance to retain the League Cup would slip away.
The team talk had the desired effect, as Jeanfield emerged a different side in the second half. On 48 minutes, M. Gillies delivered a superb cross which K. Brown met with a towering header to level the match. Just two minutes later, J. Jardine produced a neat lay-off to A. Abboud, who smashed the ball home to put the Swifts back in front.
Letham continued to push with their two strikers causing problems, but Jeanfield defended well and limited them to few clear opportunities. On 77 minutes, the Swifts put the tie to bed when R. Shillan’s corner was met by a powerful J. Jardine header to make it 4–2.
Jeanfield could have added further goals late on, but some good defending from Letham kept the scoreline as it was.
