Jeanfield travelled to Burrelton for their latest league fixture with a full squad available, buoyed by already having silverware secured this season. Knowing the challenge ahead, they were prepared for a tough encounter and a side capable of taking points off anyone on their day.
The match started brightly, with both teams looking to impose themselves early and create openings. Despite some promising build-up play at both ends, clear-cut chances were limited. The closest either side came in the first half arrived on the 30-minute mark. K. Brown delivered an inviting cross to the back post where A. Abboud rose unmarked and powered a header towards goal, only to be denied by a stunning save from the Burrelton goalkeeper.
At the break, it remained goalless, with both sides evenly matched.
The second half began under worsening conditions as heavy rain battered the pitch, making an already soft surface increasingly difficult to play on. Despite this, both teams continued to try and play football.
On 52 minutes, the deadlock was broken. A ball over the top sent the Burrelton striker through on goal. His initial effort was well saved by the Jeanfield keeper, but the rebound fell kindly and was converted to give the hosts the lead.
That goal sparked a response from Jeanfield. Applying sustained pressure and forcing a series of corners, they eventually found their equaliser on 67 minutes. A. Philips won a free kick on the edge of the box, and K. Mitchell stepped up to fire a low, driven effort through the wall and into the net.
With momentum building, Jeanfield pushed hard for a winner, but as the game entered its closing stages, misfortune struck. In the 85th minute, a cross into the box caused confusion as the goalkeeper attempted to punch under pressure. Failing to make clean contact, the ball dropped dangerously and was inadvertently turned into the net by a Jeanfield defender, handing Burrelton what looked like a decisive lead.
However, the Swifts refused to give in. Showing great character, they continued to press and were rewarded deep into stoppage time. In the 91st minute, a corner was headed back across goal by A. Smith, falling perfectly for J. Jardine, who made no mistake in smashing home the equaliser.
With a few minutes still to play, Jeanfield pushed for a dramatic winner, but it wasn’t to be. The match ended level, with the Swifts earning a hard-fought point and showcasing their resilience and never-say-die attitude.
