Match Report - Kettons AFC v Jeanfield Swifts AFC

Chris Mathews5 Jul - 13:46

Champions crowned in style as the Swifts hit Kettins for nine.

Jeanfield travelled to Kettins for their final league fixture of the season, having already secured the league title. Regardless of the result, the championship trophy would be presented after the match, but with the squad missing 10 players through injury following a gruelling run of fixtures, the Swifts were determined to finish the campaign with a victory and make the celebrations even sweeter.

The hosts made the worst possible start for Jeanfield, taking the lead after just two minutes. Despite being warned about Kettins' tendency to play short corners, the Swifts failed to react as the routine ended with the ball being bundled home at the back post.

Jeanfield responded superbly. On nine minutes, N. Kennedy threaded a perfectly weighted pass into J. Jardine, who timed his run to beat the offside trap before finishing confidently at the near post to level the scores.

Frustratingly, the Swifts were caught out again just 10 minutes later from another short corner. The cross was floated into the box and an unmarked Kettins player volleyed home to restore the home side's advantage.

That goal sparked Jeanfield into life. They began to dominate possession and create chance after chance, and on 28 minutes R. Shillan found N. Kennedy, who brilliantly headed the ball into his own path before calmly slotting home to make it 2-2.

Five minutes later, Jeanfield completed the turnaround. R. Shillan delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box where B. Blyth arrived at the back post to head home.

The Swifts weren't finished there. On 37 minutes, J. Jardine played a superb reverse pass into B. Calderwood, who skipped past his marker before unleashing a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner to cap off a dominant first-half display and give Jeanfield a 4-2 lead at the break.

As the teams headed into the changing rooms there was a brief moment of handbags between the sides, but Ben Calderwood had only one thing on his mind for the second half—adding to his tally.

Just two minutes after the restart, B. Blyth's cross caused problems, the goalkeeper could only fumble the ball, and Calderwood reacted quickest to smash home his second of the afternoon and make it 5-2.

Kettins pulled one back on 55 minutes with a simple through ball, although Jeanfield felt there had been a foul in the build-up that went unpunished.

Any hopes of a comeback were quickly ended. On the hour mark, R. Green produced a sublime through ball to Calderwood, who powered past three defenders before emphatically firing into the net.

Two minutes later, R. Shillan laid the ball into A. Abboud, who struck a superb half-volley beyond the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

The goals continued to flow on 64 minutes. Shillan again turned provider, releasing Calderwood down the right. His dangerous low cross was turned into the net by a Kettins defender for an own goal.

Calderwood completed a sensational afternoon on 84 minutes. Shillan raced down the wing before sliding the ball into his path, and the striker made no mistake, smashing home his fourth goal to complete a remarkable 9-3 victory.
