Storm Austen threatened to force a postponement, but the weather thankfully held off, allowing the game to go ahead as the Swifts made the short journey to take on a Luncarty side that had enjoyed a strong start to the season.
Jeanfield completely dominated the first half, carving out plenty of space and a host of opportunities. If not for some heroic goalkeeping and a few wayward finishes, the Swifts could easily have gone into the break 8-0 up.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 34th minute when a deep corner dropped to Nathan McNicol. He floated a brilliant cross back into the danger area, where Ronan Gillies leaped like a salmon to head the ball off the post and in.
Barely a minute later in the 35th minute, Jeanfield struck again. A rapid break down the left flank saw Gillies turn provider, slipping the ball inside to Kros Brown. Brown struck it first time from the edge of the box, leaving the Luncarty keeper utterly helpless.
The second half continued in much the same vein, with Jeanfield dictating the play. Luncarty managed to carve out a couple of half-chances without truly threatening, but the Swifts knew that at 2-0, a single goal for the hosts could dramatically shift the momentum.
Jeanfield put the game to bed in spectacular fashion in the 82nd minute. Kyle Mitchell delivered a pinpoint cross to find Mark McNiven—who had incredibly started his run from the left-back position just outside his own box. Arriving at the back post, McNiven unleashed a stunning volley past the keeper to make it three for the Swifts.
The hosts were handed a controversial lifeline in the 87th minute. Following a skewed clearance, a Luncarty winger whipped in a first-time cross to catch the defense off guard. Despite the Swifts holding a fantastic offside line that left a Luncarty attacker standing completely alone on the penalty spot, the referee inexplicably waved play on. The striker beat the keeper in the air, and the ball eventually scrambled into the back of the net.
Luncarty had one final opportunity in the dying seconds, but a 3-2 scoreline would have been a terrible misrepresentation of a match that Jeanfield dominated from the first whistle to the last.
