Jeanfield kicked off their League Cup defence in spectacular fashion, handing second-division Stanley a punishing 15-0 defeat at the Riverside. In the first of four group stage matches in a five-team section, the manager’s pre-game demands for a ruthless edge and midfield creativity were answered emphatically.

The hosts set a terrifying pace right out of the gate, with Ronan Gillies securing a phenomenal hat-trick within the opening ten minutes. He opened the scoring on four minutes, swiveling onto a Kyle Mitchell flick to smash a half-volley into the top corner from 14 yards. Four minutes later, a slick Jack Jardine backheel put Gillies through to beat the offside trap for his second. By the 10th minute, Ben Calderwood drove in from the right wing to set up Gillies, who looped his finish over the keeper to complete his treble.

Stanley’s nightmare worsened in the 11th minute when a quick clearance fell straight to Kyle Mitchell, who gleefully lobbed the stranded stopper from 25 yards out.

While the Stanley goalkeeper actually pulled off a few great saves throughout the afternoon to prevent the scoreline from getting even further out of hand, the Jeanfield attack was simply overwhelming.

Aidan Smith added a fifth on 32 minutes with a clever chip at the near post, and just before the break, Jardine squared for Mark McNiven to drill a 26-yard strike into the bottom corner.

The onslaught continued after the interval. On 52 minutes, Kyle MacDonald brought down a Corey Davies cross and fired into the top corner.

Moments later, Calderwood dinked a beautiful pass into the path of Mitch Hunter, who smashed it home.

Goalkeeper Drew Caruthers even got an assist in the 67th minute, launching a ball upfield for Calderwood to calmly lob the keeper.

The final fifteen minutes saw Jeanfield show no mercy in a frantic flurry of goals.

In the 76th minute, Mitchell slipped the ball to Gillies for his fourth of the afternoon, and just two minutes later, Scott Philips laid it off for the on-fire striker to net his fifth.

Smith grabbed his second on 83 minutes, expertly controlling a Mitchell pass on his chest to tap in at the far post. Smith was heard saying I am getting a hat-trick.

On the 85th minute Stanley scored, unfortunately into their own net after a low cross from Gillies was deflected into the net.

On the 89th minute Hunter played in Smith to smash home his hat-trick as promised

Finally, deep into stoppage time, Mitchell grabbed yet another assist, playing in Calderwood who turned his defender and fired into the top corner to secure his brace.
