Jeanfield Swifts travelled to Carnoustie for the first round of the Scottish Cup, facing familiar opponents after meeting at the second-round stage last season. That previous encounter saw the sides battle through gale-force winds in a 1–1 draw before Swifts comfortably took the replay 2–0 at the Riverside. While the breeze was up again this time around, the conditions were far more playable.

The opening exchanges were cagey, with neither side registering an effort on goal until the 10th minute. A sharp through ball from Kros Brown picked out Jack Jardine, who cut inside and forced a fine fingertip save from the Carnoustie goalkeeper to turn the ball around the post.

Just two minutes later, Jardine threatened again as he ran onto another through ball, controlling on his left before shifting onto his right, though his 12th-minute effort failed to trouble the keeper.

Despite Jeanfield looking the more likely to break the deadlock, it was the hosts who struck first on 15 minutes. Swifts failed to shut down a cross from out wide, allowing the Carnoustie striker to beat the defenders to the ball and finish emphatically into the top corner.

Undeterred by going behind, Jeanfield mounted sustained pressure. The equaliser arrived in the 34th minute when Ronan Gillies slipped a pass through to Jardine, who timed his run into space and struck an early first-time finish to curl it around the advancing keeper and level the tie.

Just before the interval, the visitors completed the turnaround. In the 42nd minute, Kyle Mitchell sprayed a ball out wide to Brown, who drove down the flank, beat his man with a step-over, and whipped in a low cross that deflected off a Carnoustie centre-half and into the net to hand Swifts a deserved lead.

Carnoustie came out with intent after the break, carving out a couple of half-chances that failed to genuinely test the Jeanfield goalkeeper.

The Swifts then delivered the decisive blow in the 51st minute when Jardine collected the ball, turned sharply, and lifted a pass into the path of Kros Brown, who took a tidy touch before toe-poking past the keeper to make it 3–1.

From that moment on, Jeanfield managed the tie with composure. The defence completely nullified Carnoustie’s attack, restricting the hosts from registering another shot while creating opportunities to extend the margin further.

A fourth goal was not required, as the referee brought an accomplished cup performance to a close.

Several players could have been awarded the man of the match award across the spine of the pitch, with strong showings from the centre-backs, central midfield, and strikers. The honours, however, went to Kyle MacDonald, who delivered a relentless, high-energy shift breaking up Carnoustie’s play in the middle of the park.
