Juniors outfought in Fife

Dundonald gained a little bit of revenge or finishing runners up to Swifts in last seasons Premier League by deservedly claiming the 3 points in the latest Super League fixture.

Once again Swifts conceded 3 goals or more in defeat and this has to be sorted ASAP if the Perth side want to compete in this division. Scoring goals does not seem a problem but the ease at which teams are scoring against us is a worry.

Swifts travelled to Fife on the back of last weekends Scottish Cup Victory over Lugar Boswell Thistle while Bluebell also faced Ayrshire opposition in the way of Ardrossan Winton Rovers and were knocked out by the odd goal in 3.

The opening half hour of the game was fairly even with both teams creating chances. The closest the home team came was when the ball broke to Anthony in the box but Mark Mitchell made a good block. Jeanfields best chance was when a tempting Stevie McManus free kick from wide missed everyone and went inches past the post with the keeper beaten.

It was the home side who opened the scoring just after the half hour and this was the start of the catalyst for the next 20 minutes in which they scored 4 goals without reply to put the game out of Swifts reach.

A corner from the right was fired across the 6 yard box without any Swifts challenge on the ball and Rarity stabbed the ball in at the far post. Despite this Swifts nearly levelled straight from kick off.

Chris Scott broke through several tackles and crossed for Daniel Kelly in the middle. DK got above his marker and headed past the keeper but hit the bar before Lewis Baker headed wide of target. So close for Swifts as they looked to get back into the game.

For the rest of the half the play was one way and that was towards Mitchell in the Jeanfield goal.

The Swifts number 1 had to look sharped when McKenzie cut inside and shot for goal but the Monk palmed the ball away to safety. The next time McKenzie got the better of the keeper and doubled the home sides lead.

A cross from the right was not closed down and the big number 10 got ahead of his marked to fire a header into the net off the crossbar with Mitchell having no chance. Soon it was almost goal number 3 for the Bell as once again a Bluebell player rose unchallenged at a corner but Mitchell again made a great save this time down low to his left.

A goal just before half time would have given Swifts a boost but it was the home side who extended their lead.

Paul Quinn picked up the ball on the left corner of the box before moving inside and unleashing a curling shot into the far corner of the net past the helpless keeper to give Dundonald a commanding half time lead.

Swifts gaffer Ross Gunnion responded to a poor opening half with a double substitution at half time with Lee Deans and Scott Sutherland replacing Fraser Smith and Keith Dewar.

Just as the first half ended the second half started the same with the action flowing towards Mitchells goal. Meikle eased past several challenges but Mitchell twice blocked his efforts as he looked to keep the score down. From the resulting corner there was nothing he could do as Quinn doubled his tally with a powerful header.

The home side sensing that the game was over eased off and allowed Swifts to come back into the game. Lewis Baker pulled a goal back when he smashed the ball in off the far post after it broke to him in the box. Daniel Kelly then headed over when leaning backwards as Swifts pushed forward in hope of gaining something from the game. With 15 minutes to go they pulled another goal back.

Jordan Leslie fired a long diagonal ball into the box which Lennox dropped under pressure and Deans volleyed into the empty net to make the score look closer than it was.

A disappointing result and we will soon need to start picking up points as that is now a third of the season gone and we have collected only 7 points. The team must work harder without the ball to make it tougher for teams to score against us.

Next week we get a break from league business as we travel the short distance over the Tay to face Scone Thistle in the preliminary round of the GA Engineering Cup. This is the first meeting of the teams at Farquharson Park since 2011.
