Jeanfield kicked off the new season at home vs Leith Athletic at Bertha Park and a healthy crowd were treated to an entertaining and well-matched encounter, with nine goals shared between the teams.

The first three arrived in a frantic first 20 minutes. The visitors settled into their short passing game the quicker, but it would be Jeanfield who would take the lead on five minutes with a stunning finish from the impressive Liam Strong.

Strong's brother Aiden, stole possession from a Leith throw-in deep in their own half and squared it to his younger sibling, who had time to set himself and despatch an arrowed finish into the top corner from 25 yards.

The brothers would combine again when Strong senior pressed the Leith keeper who had overplayed at the edge of his box, the ball reached Strong (Liam) this time a full 35 yards from goal and with the keeper stranded off his line he flighted a perfectly placed shot into the empty net.

The two-goal lead would be short-lived when a great through pass by Leith's diminutive number 4, picked out the run from Mabon who cooly finished beyond Forsyth to make it 2-1.

The Swifts would extend the lead again in 36 minutes. A corner on the left-hand side was punched clear, but Sweeney had stayed forward for a and when the ball broke to him on the right, he provided a great cross for Strong (Aiden) to head home.

Jeanfield were playing with confidence now and two minutes later the lead was stretched again, another corner on the right and this time Sweeney turned finisher, tucking home a neat finish at the near post.

The Edinburgh side were gifted a route back into the game minutes later. Jeanfield had possession at the edge of the box but played themselves into trouble. A quick pass released Wardlaw and Forsyth couldn't stop his shot which reduced the deficit before halftime.

The early stages of the second half saw Jeanfield on the offensive, but without the territorial advantage being converted. Strong (Liam), who had been dangerous throughout, was replaced due to injury, by Ramsay after 60 minutes.

Leith pressure led to several corners as the balance of the game began to swing. Scott and Stewart were withdrawn after 70 minutes and Jeffers and Peebles were introduced but the changes did not have the intended impact. Leith snatched a third goal on the break-away with a low cross converted by Greatorex.

As the game reached a critical phase, Jeanfield wasted more than one opportunity to regain control with some wayward shooting and would be punished.

A poor clearance and a missed tackle allowed Hunter into the box and he shot across Forsyth to tie the game.

Momentum was now with Leith and with minutes to go, they would complete an unlikely comeback to snatch all three points. Again Swifts were agents of their own downfall with more naive defending in their own defensive third. Wardlaw was gifted a chance and duly converted for his second of the game.

A sore one to take for Swifts who should have taken all three points. Next fixture is away to Tynecastle on Friday 6th, KO 8pm at Saughton Enclosure.
