Having lost twice already, Swifts welcomed Cumbernauld Colts for the third time this year with this being the first official match. It wasn’t to turn out third time lucky as the Colts earned a deserved victory.
Swifts didn’t start as well as last week and found themselves pinned back by the visitors who were dominating proceedings. The half was developing as a holding operation with Swifts managing to prevent any real opportunities. Howwever the visitors got a deserved opener after a good run and cross from the left was met at the back post at the edge of the box and finished with a perfect lobbed shot back across McIllravey.
Swifts were up against it and struggling to play any meaningful passes. However they were starting to finally make inroads at the other end and McGinley went close with a long range strike and then a good McDonald run saw her shot just miss the back post. Just before half-time Swifts got the equaliser when Shaw headed home a Robertson cross. The Swifts late half pressure maybe earned the goal but they went in at the break happy to be level as the Colts had done enough to be ahead.
Swifts were hoping to see a brighter second half and did started with a bit more intent. The game was now a bit more even and was turning into a bit of a battle with the next goal going to be vital. It was Colts who got it when they turned home after confusion in the home box at a corner.
The game was now stretched as Swifts tried to get back into the match. The game was settled when a long ball over the top was missed by the Swifts defence and the away striker finished clinically.
The visitors rubbed salt into Swifts wounds another goal in the final minute when McSherry nutmegged McIllavey.
Swifts were off the pace today and second best to a strong Colts side. It doesn’t however take the shine off a really positive start to the season by the young Perth side who will look to bounce back quickly and continue their development.
