Grossi Strike Breaks Glasgow Resistance

Swifts welcomes lower division Glasgow Girls Development to Perth for a preliminary Scottish tie, and although the visitors were to exit the cup they certainly gave an excellent account of themselves with a battling defensive display.
The game was to generally be played towards the visitors goal and the early exchanges were messy with injury stoppages on both sides adding to the start-stop nature of the game. It was Swifts however who took the lead when Grossi collected the ball at the edge of the box and sent a great shot across the helpless keeper.
Despite taking the lead Swifts were not making as many opening as they would have liked although McIntyre smashed a great effort off the bar and then McGinley had a good header from a Mearns cross saved well by the keeper, and keeper again did well to prevent Todd. Despite the constant pressure the Swifts had to settle for a solitary first half goal.
Swifts started the second half with a more attacking formation but the early exchanges saw Glasgow have more of the ball. However the earlier pattern of Swifts pressure returned and now the home team were creating more openings. Grossi struck the post and then McGinley, McIntyre and Mearns all had efforts that missed the target, and then McDonald header over from a Grossi cross, and then a long-range Grossi effort brought out an excellent save .
As the game entered its final stages and just as it looked as if the Swifts would have to settle for a single goal, McGiney popped up and after beating a few challenges on the edge of the box found herself 1v1 with the keeper and flicked a strong right-footed finish.
A difficult match for the Swifts as the visitors' plan to frustrate was successful. The home side however will be pleased that they negotiated a difficult tie successfully and have another round of the cup to enjoy.
