Swifts Pay The Penalty

Swifts travelled to Aberdeen to play a young Aberdeen Development side and after last week's cup success were brought down to earth with a defeat in a penalty shootout.
The game was competitive and it was the Dons who took an early lead with a ball over the top evading Martin and McDonald and the striker shooting home.
Swifts were back on the attack quickly and three excellent saves by the home keeper maintained the lead. Swifts however equalised with an own-goal and then proceeded to pepper the Dons goal with shots. Again the keeper stood up well to the task and woodwork also assisting with a McGinley strike.
Against the run of play the Dons went ahead with an excellent goal. The striker beating McLeod wide and then Martin and McDonald before calmly slotting below the advancing McIlravey. Although the goal was against the run of pay the young Dons side had worked very hard and couldn't be denied the right to be ahead.
Swifts came out of the blocks 2nd half and created a host of chances in the first quarter but were finding the final finish elusive. Finally they equalised when Smith slotted home a McGinley cross.
The game continued to ebb and flow with Swifts dominating play almost completely but the home side were excellent on the break.
The game and extra time saw no more goals with the closest being a last minute McGinley free-kick against the bar.
With some excellent penalties including one from keeper McIlravey, the home side won the shootout with McClelland's kick just clearing the bar.
The young home side had withstood a great deal of pressure and nobody could grudge them the victory and they go into the next round with the best of wishes from Perth.
