Buchan knock Swifts off Top

Swifts travelled to Buchan for the top of the table clash. In an entertaining game they were to lose their spot at the top to their hosts who were more clinical in the final third.
Swifts were first to show when a neat move saw McGinley through with her angled shot just missing the back post.
The hosts then took an early lead with a good goal, when a sharp turn and shot in a tight space from a corner beat McIlravey. This encouraged Buchan and their direct style was unsettling the Swifts. However the makeshift defence stood firm and grew in confidence as the half progressed, with Grossi and Nicholson outstanding in the full back areas..
McIntyre was then put through by a great pass from MacLean and saw her strong strike hit the side net, just missing the target by inches.
Buchan then doubled their lead when a ball over the top looked perhaps to find the striker in an offside position. She however kept her cool, strode forward and side-footed home.
This was now going to be a test for the Swifts and to their credit they responded. The ball dropped to Thatcher and she despatched a great left-foot strike into the top corner.
Both teams were looking for the next goal and the game sizzled right up the half-time whistle.
The Swifts came out for the second half and showed great courage. Passing the ball well they probed for an equaliser. McGinley burst through but her shot smacked off the crossbar. Another good run from McGinley almost set McIntyre up.
Their efforts were dashed when Grossi was dispossessed and the striker made her way to goal, beat Martin and then flicked an outrageous shot into the back post.
Swifts weren't finished and again cut the deficit to one goal when McGinley sneaked in between defender and keeper and lobbed home.
It was game on again and Swifts were pushing to level the game while Martin was coping well with the areal threat. Buchan however had other ideas and killed the game in the last minute with a great strike into the top corner. An excellent goal to finish an excellent game.
Buchan will be delighted to get the win and go top of the league. Swifts will be disappointed that they got nothing from a game they contributed much to.
Steve Grossi was in positive mind despite the defeat. "Firstly I must congratulate Buchan on going top of the league. It is up to the rest of us now to catch back the deficit. I'm sure there are plenty twists and turns to come this season. With a depleted squad we had to ask a few to play out of position and the rest to support them. I thought the girls were excellent. They were brave on the ball and created some good chances, and certainly deserved something from the game. I've taken lots of positives from the game today, and we are looking forward to welcoming Celtic next week".
