Ladies Pipped in 5-goal Thriller

Swifts travelled to meet a Glasgow Girls side that were the in-form team and looking to step to the top of the league. In a thrilling match that ebbed and flowed, the Swifts left empty-handed after falling to a late penalty.

The game started with a bang when, in the first minute, Grossi stepped onto the ball and sent a great diagonal pass which found McIntyre through on goal. The in-form striker bravely beat the keeper and rolled the ball home.

The game had started at great pace and didn't let up with both teams committed to attacking play. It was proving to be a highly entertaining game . McGinley was through on goal having beaten the offside trap but saw her shot go past the post and then the same player was through and a slight hesitation saw her miss the opportunity to double the lead.

These let offs gave the home side hope and they stormed back with two quick goals. Firstly McManus showed quick feet on the box which allowed her to get an excellent shot off to level the scores. Shortly after Coleman rose unchallenged to head home from a corner.

Swifts will have been disappointed to be behind after putting so much into the first half but the home side had responded positively to going behind.

The second half was just as close and it was Swifts who drew first blood when Todd drifted over an enticing cross which found McGinley at the back post. With one touch the ball was set up and se delivered a deft lob over the keeper.

Play was now raging from end to end with both teams looking for the winner. It was unfortunate that things became scrappy as time progressed mainly due to the inconsistent refereeing that was helping neither side and bringing a touch of farce to proceedings. The winner came for the home side when Traynor was tripped by Flynn-Scott and Logan despatched past Cochran who had up to then had an outstanding game.

Swifts will be devastated that their efforts brought them no reward and on an afternoon where a share of the points might have been fairer credit must go to the home side who didn't settle for the point and kept pushing for the winner.
Head Coach McCrindle was philosophical in defeat. "It's our first defeat since 3rd April so its a reminder of how well we have done so far in this league. I don't think the performance matched the result. We got off to a great start scoring after a minute but lost poor goals from our point of view and again done well to get level. I fancied us to go and win the game from there and we created a few chances but just needed to be a bit more clinical, and then we get done with the penalty in the last few minutes. We kept going and finished with 4 up front but it wasn't t be.
