After battling the conditions and strong opposition, Jeanfield Swifts U11s earned a good draw

The wind in Kirkcaldy threatened to blow the girls off their feet at one point today, but they stood fast and dealt superbly with the conditions and tough opposition.

The game started tentatively, with both sides struggling to deal with the very strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch, into Jeanfield's faces. While Jeanfield had the upper hand and lots of pressure, they were unable to convert. However the deadlock was broken after 12 minutes when Lottie crossed from the right-hand side of the box and Zoe put the ball in the back of the net.

Within minutes, Raith scored their equaliser, from a break out of defence, and but for some fantastic goalkeeping from Lucy would have had a second shortly after. With the home team's midfield making strong breaks down the right-hand side, the ball advanced down the pitch and eventually came left. A shot from the edge of the area looked bound to hit the back of the net when Lucy got her fingertips to it and forced it over, by way of the cross-bar. Raith continue to press from the corner, which EIlidh dealt with firmly, but after a second corner to the home team Jeanfield were able to escape and Zoe set off with the ball. Her first effort was well met by the Raith keeper, but then Zoe found herself with the ball at her feet again and scored a stunning goal to restore her team's lead at half time.

Playing with the wind in the second half, and with Anna on for Zoe up front, Jeanfield started brightly and Eilidh took just four minutes to score her first goal, with the ball flying off her right boot. Having established a two-goal cushion, however, Jeanfield now started to soak up more and more pressure, and seemed happy to let the home team have the ball. Almost inevitably Raith's girls grew in confidence as a result, and two goals in quick succession brought the scores level again.

It was time for Jeanfield to step up the pressure once more, and this they did with a subtle change in formation that saw Leah take a holding role in central midfield allowing Eilidh and Lottie to play in more advanced positions. The extra support up front soon bore fruit and mid-way through the half Eilidh scored her second with a rifled right-footed shot that eluded the Raith keeper. Eilidh nearly had her hat-trick two minutes later, when shooting from a more acute angle she rattled the woodwork. A good clearance from Raith averted the danger.

While Jeanfield kept pressing, with Zoe back on the pitch for Lottie, Raith always looked dangerous on the break, and ultimately scored the equaliser with just three minutes left on the clock. The draw was well-earned by both teams, and Jeanfield can be happy to have once again played a passing game to move the ball around, rather than run themselves into the ground as they had been doing earlier in the season.
